Tagua Nuts (Vegetable Ivory)

 "Tagua", also known as "vegetable ivory", is the nut of a palm tree (Phytelephas Accuatorialis), 5 - 6 meters (15 - 20 feet) high that grows in the rain forests of Northwestern South America. The tagua nut is hard and white and is the main alternative for helping avoid deforestation in Ecuador as well as preserving species attacked by men in order get ivory from them. Before plastics, buttons were commonly made of tagua nut. These Nantucket parts are each individually hand carved by indigenous craftspeople from Ecuador. The knobs are hand turned on a lathe.

 Oak Basketmaker's Stool Frame
A very comfortable stool with short ladder back.   Sit on it while weaving your baskets!  It has rungs in various places allowing you to "change your lap" to accommodate your weaving.
Stool Seat - 22 3/4" high.  Back - 33" high.  Seat - 14 1/4" deep x 17 3/4" wide.  This stool comes assembled.  The seat needs to be woven.  Suggestions for the seat:  Flat Reed, shaker Tape, Splint, Rush, or Binder Cane. takes approx. 48 yards 5/8" or 29 yards 1" Shaker tape, 1 lb. flat reed, or 2 lb. rush.
