Tagua Nuts (Vegetable Ivory)

 "Tagua", also known as "vegetable ivory", is the nut of a palm tree (Phytelephas Accuatorialis), 5 - 6 meters (15 - 20 feet) high that grows in the rain forests of Northwestern South America. The tagua nut is hard and white and is the main alternative for helping avoid deforestation in Ecuador as well as preserving species attacked by men in order get ivory from them. Before plastics, buttons were commonly made of tagua nut. These Nantucket parts are each individually hand carved by indigenous crafts people from Ecuador. The nuts yellow beautifully with age.
